Seneca Fear and Memory Quote Print
"To be happy you must eliminate two things: the fear of a bad future and the memory of a bad past"
Source: A popular modern paraphrase of Seneca, Letters to Lucilius, Letter 78.14. In Richard Gummere's 1917 translation: "Two elements must therefore be rooted out once for all,—the fear of future suffering, and the recollection of past suffering; since the latter no longer concerns me, and the former concerns me not yet."
Seneca wrote this to a friend worn down by a long illness. His point: most of our pain lives in anticipation and in memory. What is past can no longer touch us, and what is coming has not arrived yet, so the present moment is usually lighter than it feels.
