Saint-Exupéry Perfection Quote Print
"Perfection is achieved not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away."
Source: Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Terre des hommes (1939), translated as Wind, Sand and Stars. He wrote it about aircraft design while working as a pilot: an aircraft was perfected by stripping it down, not by adding to it.
Designers, engineers and writers have adopted this sentence as a rule because it holds for any craft: the hard part is knowing what to remove. The original French begins "Il semble que la perfection soit atteinte…" ("It seems that perfection is attained…"). That modest opening is part of its charm.
Who it's for: designers, architects, product teams, writers and editors, minimalists. It's a thoughtful gift for a new studio, a promotion or a graduation in design or engineering.
Where it works: above a desk, in a meeting room, in a studio or a clean hallway. The restrained layout follows its own advice. A small Little Prince planet icon is a quiet nod to Saint-Exupéry's best-known book.
