"Knowing Yourself" Wisdom Quote Print

€79,00

"Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom."

Source: Attributed to Aristotle. The line is commonly credited to him, but we have not found it in his surviving works. It is a modern phrasing of the much older Delphic maxim gnōthi seauton, "know thyself". Our Journal post explains the history.

Attributed to Aristotle. The line is widely credited to him, but it doesn't appear in his surviving works. The idea is older: gnōthi seauton, "know thyself", was inscribed at the Temple of Apollo at Delphi, and Plato's Socrates returns to it again and again. Aristotle's own ethics builds on the same foundation, since you can't build virtue without an honest view of your own character.

We tell you this because a print you'll look at every day should be honest about where its words come from. The idea has been with us for 2,500 years, whoever put it in this form.

Who it's for: therapists and coaches, philosophy and psychology students, anyone starting a new chapter. A good gift for graduations, new offices and milestone birthdays.

Where it works: a study, therapy or coaching room, a reading corner or a bedroom wall. The clean Bodoni typography keeps it calm rather than preachy.
